Message from the Director

My policy of leading various JICC activities is to reach out to as many Kenyan people as possible, in terms of wide geographical area and different generations.Director

Among others, the JICC will focus on young students at schools who will surely play an important role for solidifying the relationship between two countries in future.

In order to efficiently and effectively conduct the activities of the JICC, I believe that it is really important to widely incorporate Kenyan counterpart institutions and people due to the limited human and financial capacity of the JICC.

Therefore we welcome active Kenyan involvement into our activities as a partner, including constructive opinion.

H. Kikuchi

Director

newVISIT BY ARYA GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL

43 students from Arya Girls Secondary School recently visited the Embassy to learn about Japan and Japanese culture.

The students were first introduced to a video entitled “Japan- Land of Vitality”, which gave them insight into what Japan is all about and this led the students to ask many questions.

The Japanese tea ceremony was then introduced. The students were taught a brief history and the basics of the tea ceremony and even one student actually prepared the Japanese tea. They enjoyed the tea served to them as the guests but were more fascinated by the ambience surrounding the tea ceremony.

They were next introduced to Origami, which is Japanese Art of paper folding. They were taught how to make a “box” using six papers. The students were overjoyed when each one of them had made a box by herself.

To add to their excitement, they were shown a Japanese theatrical animation entitled “The Girl who Lept Through Time” which is mainly about a 17 year old school girl called Makoto Konno, whose everyday life is suddenly recomposed once she becomes a latest heroine who leaps across the 21st Century.
To sum up the lessons on Japanese culture, the students were introduced to Ikebana (Japanese art of flower arrangement), whereby they were given a brief history of Ikebana, and then they were taught about the main pillars of Ikebana. The girls were exalted by the flower arrangements and as they tried it out, they came to realize that it was not actually that hard.
