E/N signing ceremony for the Food Assistance Programme for Eritrea

On 8th April 2019, in Asmara, the capital city of Eritrea, the Exchange of Notes (E/N) for a grant assistance of JPY300,000,000 (approximately USD2.7 million) for “the Food Assistance Programme” was signed by Mr. Hirotaka Ishikawa, First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan in the State of Eritrea and H.E. Dr. Giorgis Teklemikael, Minister of National Development of the State of Eritrea.

The grant will enable the Government of Eritrea to purchase wheat (approximately 2,700t), which will be distributed to the local markets for affordable price and the proceeds to be utilized to implement economic and social development projects in the country.

Since the prolonged drought has adversely affected the entire region of Horn of Africa, Eritrea has faced a significant challenge on food security.
The objective of the programme is to improve the food security and nutrition for the people of Eritrea, as a concrete action towards improvement of food security in Africa which Japan announced during the TICAD VI held in Nairobi in August 2016.
