29th October 2019, Mr. Yoshihiro KATAYAMA, Chargé d’Affaires of Japan to the State of Eritrea and H.E. Dr. Giorgis Teklemikael, Minister of National Development of the State of Eritrea signed and exchanged documents on the following Economic and Social Development Programme (Equipment procurement for water supply and purification. (The grant amount is 1.5 billion JPY (approximately 138 million USD)). The purpose of the programme is to improve water supply capability of the Asmara Water Supply and Sewerage Department (AWSSD) through procurement of equipment, and finally to contribute to the improvement of water accessibility for Asmara citizens.
Only 47% of the population in Asmara have access to piped water but limited water at taps due to inefficient water supply system. Majority of Asmara citizens obtain water from water truck and boreholes.
The population of Asmara has increased while water supply system had not been upgraded since its installation. AWSSD has been facing challenges in the replacement of the decrepit system and equipment. Japan International Cooperation Agency has provided technical training to AWSSD officers to build up their capacity. This economic and social development programme is testament of Government of Japan’s commitment to support human security to the future.
