Webinar on Peacebuilding in the Horn of Africa by a Japanese Professor

The Embassy of Japan in Somalia and the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding organized a webinar on, "Peace and Security in the Horn of Africa – Current Status and the Way Forward: Shedding Light on Peacebuilding Efforts in Somalia", on Monday January 13th, 2025.
 
Professor Shinoda Hideaki, from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, gave a presentation on this topic. Professor Shinoda first emphasized important changes in the perspectives of conflict analysis and peacebuilding policies over the past twenty years. He focused on Somalia, reviewing the history of its geopolitical importance, and then reviewed the challenges facing Somalia from the perspective of peace and security.
 
After addressing various international and local efforts, he finally highlighted some important points for Somalia to overcome these challenges, including with regard to partnerships with the international community and local partners.
 
Professor Shinoda's presentation was followed by a Q&A session, the audience actively shared their views and comments. Ms. Libakisu Matlo, Executive Secretary of the African Union Centre for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development, and Mr. Hamza Abdiwahab, Director of the Somali Youth Centre, also attended as commentators.
