UNDP Somalia Grant for Peace-Building Project Signing Ceremony

On the 30th of August 2012, at UNDP Somalia office in Nairobi, Ambassador Takata and Mr. Bowden, Resident Representative, UNDP Somalia signed a contract on the Project to Assist the Rehabilitation and Reintegration of the Youth Affected by the Somali Conflict, Armed Groups and Piracy which Contributes to Conflict Prevention and Peace-Building in Somalia (amount: 474,000,000 JPY).

In September 2012, a new President was elected and finally Transitional Federal Government ended, in October, new Prime Minister was elected and in November, new cabinet was selected and approved. However, there has been no effective government in Somalia for more than 20 years in a country that repeatedly experiences drought. Its poverty and security situation is devastating. In such a situation, children are so poor that they are easily tempted to accept an offer for employment by a militia, gang and pirates in the area. Children can also be negatively affected by an atrocious fiend in prison when they are put into prison just because they did not go to school.

In order to correct such children and reintegrate them into the community where they are from, this project, with a target of approximately 2,000 youth, in cooperation with communities aims at (1) advocacy and sensitisation not to engage in such groups, (2) rehabilitation and personal development of youth, and (3) Reintegration of youth into communities (legal, social, economic).

This is a joint project by UNDP, UNICEF and ILO.
