Japan extends to Kenya Loan Assistance amounting to JPN\27.7 billion towards the Mombasa Port Area Road Development Project
On May 22nd, Ambassador Toshihisa Takata and Minister for Finance Njeru Githae signed and exchanged notes for the construction of the Mombasa Port Area Road Development Project at Treasury. Road minister Franklin Bett was also present at the ceremony. Main TV stations and newspapers reported the ceremony, showing the high interest in Kenya in this project.
In his speech, Minister Githae expressed a deep appreciation to Japan for the continuous assistance and cooperation toward Kenya and emphasized that this project will not only decongest the city of Mombasa but also facilitate easy access, mobility and transportation of goods and passengers in the East Africa region and contribute to higher economic development of the whole region.
Minister Bett mentioned that this project is very big in amount and expertise is required. To enable successful implementation and rapid action of the project, he requested land owners and local groups to fully cooperate and urged experts from both sides (JICA and KeNHA) to fast-track the process.
Ambassador Takata said “In our economic cooperation, Government of Japan attaches high priority to social and environmental consideration, safety management and quality of products. We believe in minimizing negative impacts and that quality work comes round cheaper in the long run,” while concluding his remarks.
