Main activity | The grant contract signing ceremony for The Project for the Renovation of a Facility for Opening the First Deaf Center in Seychelles was held on 16th of March 2018 at English River Youth Center in Mahe, Seychelles. Ms. Yui Takashima represented H.E. Mr. Toshitsugu Uesawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Seychelles, at the signing ceremony. She presided over the grant signing between the Embassy and Mrs. Anita Gardner, the Founder and Chairperson of Association of People with Hearing Impairment (APHI). The total amount of the grant is USD 84,306 (approximately 1,305,000 SCR. The funding will be used by APHI to renovate a three-storey facility previously used as a maritime training school. The restored building will have administration offices, classrooms and offer specialized activities such as workshops and sign language interpretation services between the deaf and relevant authorities. The Deaf Center, which currently operates in a small space at the Victoria Market, is the first of its kind in Seychelles and will serve approximately 1,000 deaf people in Seychelles. Mrs. Gardner was happy to report that this grant would enable APHI to operate more efficiently from one location and upscale the activities of the center. She expressed her deep felt gratitude to the Government of Japan for the support. Ms. Takashima congratulated Mrs. Gardner on being selected for this year’s grant which is the third one since the GGP scheme was introduced in Seychelles in 2015. She wished her success and assured her of the Embassy’s support during the implementation of this important project. The project is to be completed by March 2019. |
