Joint Ceremony of Japan’s grant aid for Infrastructure projects
2018/3/22

H.E. Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta, President of the Republic of Kenya and H.E. Mr. Toshitsugu Uesawa,
Ambassador of Japan to Kenya unveiled the commemorative monument at the ceremony.
A joint ceremony of completion of Ngong Road Phase I, ground breaking for the expansion of Ngong Road Phase II, and handover of road stabilizers and equipment for road construction as grant assistance for Social and Economic Program respectively granted by the Government of Japan, was held in Nairobi County on 22nd March 2018.
H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta, H.E. Deputy President William Ruto, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Mr. James Macharia, Governor of Nairobi County Hon. Mike Mbuvi Sonko and other high level officials were present at the ceremony.
H.E. Mr. Toshitsugu Uesawa, Ambassador of Japan to Kenya maintained in his remark (See the attached), that the projects of Ngong Road expansion are expected to ease the congestion of traffic, shortening the time taken from the Dagoretti-Cornerto the Kilimani Junction. Japan’s main aim for undertaking this project is not only to improve the transport sector, but also the quality of life of the people of Kenya at large.
He also emphasized that Japan and Kenya have been cooperating for many ODA projects and Japan will continue aligning with the Big Four priority agenda and will form closer economic and developmental ties with Kenya.
Ngong Road, which is in the population growing city of Nairobi, is heavily used by commuters during the morning and evening peak hours. It had only one lane in each direction, which did not have an adequate capacity.
While phase I of the Project has already impacted on improving traffic of the targeted interval (from the National Library to the Prestige Plaza), the second phase is also expected to increase the traffic volume by about 30% and to reduce the traveling time from 40 minutes to less than 7 (projected by JICA), as well as reducing financial burden of the residents, emission of gases and noise by alleviating traffic congestion.
It is also expected that the two road stabilizers and construction related equipment made by a Japanese company, Sakai-Jukogyo, will also benefit the people of Kenya by supporting Kenyan authorities to implement road maintenance and construction.
Japan has strengthened bilateral relationship with Kenya since it started ODA projects in 1963. Kenya has currently been the biggest recipient of Japan’s ODA among Sub-Sahara African countries, as the cumulative amount of Japan’s ODA provided to Kenya is more than 600 billion Japanese Yen which is equivalent as 570 billion KES (1 JPY = 0.95 KES).
