Signing Ceremony for the Project for “Community-Based Child nutrition Improvement Project Centering around ECDE Centres (Phase-3)”

2021/3/5
On 5th March 2021, Mr. KITAGAWA Yasuhisa, Chargé d' Affaires ad Interim of Japan to the Republic of Kenya, signed a Grant Contract with Ms. KITAJIMA Keiko, Project Manager of a Japanese NGO, namely HANDS, for the project of ‘Community-Based Child nutrition Improvement Project Centering around ECDE Centres (Phase-3)’ amounting to KES about 46 million (USD 506,536).

According to HANDS, nutritional indicators for children under 5 in Kericho County reveals 28.7% of stunting (national average: 26%) and 6.6% of wasting (national average: 4%) due to chronic nutritional deficiency. In addition, the Kericho County Health Department is concerned about a lack of active intervention in the health of infants up to age 5 who enter in Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) after the last mandatory vaccination (18 months).

This project contributes to the improvement of the nutritional status of children under 5 in Sogowet / Soin Sub-county in Kericho County. It provides WASH (water, sanitisation and Hygiene) facilities, kitchen gardens to 31 ECDE centres, and provides capacity building for school staff, CHVs (Community Health Volunteer) and family members in order to disperse the knowledge on nutrition and nutritious meals and improve the health of young children.
