2023/8/12
On August 12, H.E. Mr. OKANIWA Ken, Ambassador of Japan attended the opening ceremony of the 1st “Koshien” High School Baseball Tournament in Kenya at JKUAT. “Koshien” is a special for all young baseball players where high schools vie to become number one in Japan.
The tournament was organized by the Japan-Africa Baseball & Softball Foundation (J-ABS) and the Baseball Federation of Kenya with the aim of nurturing Kenyan youth through the Japanese baseball culture. It was an event to commemorate 60th anniversary of Japan-Kenya diplomatic relations.
At the opening ceremony, Ambassador OKANIWA made a speech, and J-ABS President TOMONARI Shinya read a message from Mr. MATSUI Hideki, a former Major League Baseball player, to the Kenyan baseball players. Then Ambassador OKANIWA threw out the first pitch.
It is hoped that this tournament will serve as an opportunity to popularize baseball in Kenya and to promote the sound development of young people through the sport.
