The commendation was given in appreciation of KEMRI’s contribution to mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and Kenya through more than 4 decades of cooperation with Japan. This presentation took place together with the opening ceremony of the 5th Third Country Training Programme (TCTP), which was organised by KEMRI with JICA’s support. 13 trainees from 9 countries of East Africa region who would take 4-weeks course on laboratory management joined the opening ceremony.

Since its establishment in 1979, KEMRI has made a progress in medical research especially on prevention of communicable diseases, and it has become one of the prominent medical research laboratories within African region, contributing to address public health challenges inside and outside of Kenya. Japan has continuously supported KEMRI since its early days, through grant projects including headquarter facility construction and technical cooperation projects. KEMRI and several Japanese universities, most notably Nagasaki University, continue to run student exchange programmes and research collaborations, contributing to building mutual friendship among two countries.
