On 14th November 2023, H.E. Ambassador OKANIWA Ken presented the Ambassador’s Commendation to the Kenya Forest Research Institute (KEFRI) on the occasion of 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Kenya. The commendation was given in appreciation of KEFRI’s contribution to mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and Kenya through almost 4 decades of cooperation with Japan. This presentation took place at KEFRI headquarters with attendance of many staff members.

KEFRI is working on developing basic technology for semi-arid forestry as a hub for domestic forestry development. Japan has continuously supported KEFRI, through grant assistance including facility construction and technical cooperation. In recent years, the institute has been working on improving indigenous drought-resistant species through technical cooperation projects. The institute is also contributing to the government's goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032 by supplying seedlings. In addition, it has been conducting third country training with JICA support for over 20 years, benefiting many African countries.
