On 14 May, a Charter Conferment Ceremony for the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) was held at State House under the presence of President William Ruto.
H.E. Ambassador Matsuura attended the ceremony on behalf of the Embassy of Japan in Kenya.

The ceremony brought together senior officials of the Government of Kenya, representatives of international research institutions, and development partners. With the conferment of the Charter, KEMRI will further expand its role not only as a leading medical research institution, but also as a degree-awarding institution contributing to advanced scientific and medical education.

In his keynote address, President Ruto emphasized that investment in science, research, technology, and innovation is essential for national development and global competitiveness. He described KEMRI and KAIST as “strategic pillars” for Kenya’s future prosperity, resilience, and transformation into a knowledge-driven economy.

The KEMRI representative also expressed appreciation for the longstanding cooperation and support from the Government of Japan and Japanese institutions, including JICA and the Institute of Tropical Medicine of Nagasaki University, which have contributed significantly to strengthening Kenya’s research and health sector capacities over the years.

Japan and Kenya have long cooperated closely in the fields of health and medical research——a key area for addressing global challenges—, with KEMRI serving as one of Japan’s key partners in Kenya. The Government of Japan will continue to support human resource development and research capacity strengthening through bilateral cooperation in science, technology, and health.
