Joint Creditting Mechanism (JCM) Signing Ceremony
2013/6/12
Ambassador Takata and Mr. Ali Mohamed, Permanent Secretary-Environment, witnessed by Prof. Judi Wakhungu, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Water and Natural Resources, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation on the Joint Creditting Mechanism on 12th June, 2013.
The Joint Creditting Mechanism (JCM) is a new mitigation scheme originally proposed by the Government of Japan which will contribute to reducing global emission of green house gases (GHGs). Under this mechanism, Japan can count the GHGs reduction in developing countries achieved through Japan’s financial and technological assistance as part of Japan’s emission reduction target.
JCM is attracting attention from developing countries as a mechanism to complement Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol, in which some weaknesses are pointed out especially in terms of quick response. Kenya became the fourth partner in the world after Mongolia, Bangladesh and Ethiopia.
Based on the Memorandum of Cooperation signed during this event, a joint committee will be established in order to further discuss details of the scheme and concrete activities. In close collaboration with Government of Kenya, the Embassy of Japan will put every effort in elaborating JCM as a tool to provide a “win-win relationship” for both Japan and Kenya.
