Handing Over Ceremony of Humanitarian Aid for Flood
2013/5/23

A handing over ceremony of Japan’s humanitarian aid to flood victims in Kenya delivered through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was held on 23rd May, 2013.
The ceremony was held at the Ministry of State for Special Programmes. Mr. Andrew Mondoh, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Abbas Gullet, Secretary General of Kenya Red Cross, and Mr. Eguchi, Director of JICA Kenya Office, witnessed by Mr. Yamada, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Japan, signed relevant documents to deliver goods to the victims as soon as possible.
After the signing, they moved to Kenya Red Cross’s warehouse, where the goods had been kept, and saw the departure of a fully-packed truckfor the area affected by floods.
The aid goods, worth JPY 16 million (approximately Ksh 16 million), offered by Japan include health care kits for the victims, water purification agents, and plumber tools to repair damaged water facilities.
Mr. Yamada said during the ceremony that infrastructures, such as buildings and dams, can be reinforced by investment but we cannot build a resilient society by merely resorting to hardware and technologies alone. Importance of conversion of disaster experience into wisdom in behavior was one of his key messages to Kenyan people based on Japan’s long experience of various natural disasters.
Mr. Mondoh expressed his sincere gratitude to Japan’s continuous support to Kenya by stressing the fact that Kenya had already enhanced its capacity of disaster preparedness by deploying heavy vehicles, boats and water purification facilities, worth 400 million Kenyan Shilling, received from Japan so far, and added that the aid goods handed over would soon be delivered to the affected people.
In Kenya, severe floods took place in various places from March to May this year, and 70 people were confirmed dead and more than 100,000 were forced to evacuate. Japan sincerely hopes that the aid goods will soon reach the people and help them improve their lives.
