Ceremony for Commissioning of Package 1 of Dongo Kundu Bypass as Japan’s ODA Loan project

A ceremony for the commissioning of Dongo Kundu Bypass Package I (Mombasa port – Mwache – Miritini), an ODA Loan Project funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), was held in Mombasa County on 14th June 2018.
 
H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta, H.E. Deputy President William Ruto, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Mr. James Macharia, Governor of Mombasa County Mr. Ali Hassan Joho, Governor of Kwale County Mr. Salim Mvurya and other high level officials were present at the ceremony.
 
In the remark, H.E. Mr. Toshitsugu Uesawa, Ambassador of Japan to Kenya maintained that the Dongo Kundu Bypass development project is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve transportation of goods, people and services among the counties and other East African countries.
 

He also stressed that cooperation between Japan and Kenya has been evident through many ODA projects in Mombasa such as Mombasa Port and New Nyali Bridge. Through the strengthened bilateral relationship between Japan and Kenya, Japan will continuously contribute to Kenya’s efforts in achieving the Big 4 agenda by supporting infrastructure projects thereby contributing to faster economic growth of Kenya and East African region.
 
The Project is to construct Dongo Kundu Bypass which links North to South Coast in Mombasa, where the movement of goods and people has rapidly increased. The Project scope consists of three packages; package 1 is to connect Mombasa port – Mwache - Militini to link to Mombasa Road. Package 2 is to construct two bridges from Mwache through Tsunza to reach Dongo Kundu. Package 3 is to develop the road to Kibundani.
