Main Activity The Handing Over Ceremony of “the Project for the Improvement of Educational and Hygienic Environment at Essumba Primary School” was held on 30th July, 2018 in Essumba Sub location, Central Bunyore Location, Luanda Division, Emuhaya Sub County, Vihiga County. In attendance from the Embassy of Japan in Kenya were Deputy Chief of Mission, Mr. Yoshihiro Katayama, and the project beneficiaries including the local area County officials.

The project was awarded a grant of 82,980 (approximately  Kshs 8.5 Million) for the construction of 9 classrooms, 6 door pit latrines, renovation of 4 classrooms, installation of 200 desks and 2 water tanks at Essumba Primary School to improve the educational environment. This is a public school established in 1958. The school had 13 permanent classrooms, however the classrooms were dilapidated, some had no windows and floors were damaged. The number of pupils was over capacity. The ratio of latrines to pupils did not adhere to the specifications of the Ministry of education.

The ceremony started with hoisting of national flags of both Kenya and Japan and traditional dance performed by pupils. This was followed by speeches filled with appreciation from the officials.

Abel Kipyatar, from class 7, gave his thanks speech as a representative of all the pupils. He promised to maintain their facilities and use them well.

While giving his speech, Mr. Katayama congratulated Essumba Primary School for the successful completion of the project and briefly highlighted the other education projects that the Government of Japan has funded in Kenya. In addition to the construction of schools across Kenya, the Government of Japan is an active partner in the development of human resources in the education sector. He hoped that the successful implementation of this project will improve the pupils’ academic performance and the future leaders of this country will rise among them and contribute to the development of the community.

In closing his remarks, he wished the people long life, good health, great happiness and prosperity.
