Handing Over Ceremony at Moi International Airport, Mombasa: Installation of Facial Recognition System

2019/9/30
On Monday, 30th September 2019, H.E. Ambassador Ryoichi Horie attended the handing over ceremony for the installation of the facial recognition system, designed by Nippon Electric Company, at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa. The installation of this system, which was organized by the IOM Kenya Office, is one of the key components of the project titled “Comprehensive Community Stabilization in the Kenya Coast Region and Key Border Points in Mombasa” supported by Government of Japan.

Once fully operational, this new system is expected to improve immigration and border management at the Moi International Airport and safeguard the peaceful and productive lives of people of Mombasa.

This project was initiated after receiving a request from the Government of Kenya as a result of the tremendous success of the facial recognition system which was installed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in 2017. To-date the system at JKIA, which was also supported by the Government of Japan in collaboration with Nippon Electric Company is actively operated and has ensured fast and effective border management and enhanced the overall security.

The IOM Regional Director for East and Horn of Africa, Mr. Mohammed Abdiker, who was present at the Ceremony stated that he believed that the combination of the high-tech system and such human capacity will support and enhance the border management capacity at the airport further. He hoped that the facial recognition system together with direct support to the at-risk youth and community policing can holistically assist the Government of Kenya in improving security, social cohesion and promote better migration management.

Ambassador Horie stated that enhancing border management was one of the important issues discussed at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) 7, which was held in Yokohama in August this year. He underscored the importance of advancing immigration control and border management at the Moi International Airport as this would further improve the overall security in the area. He also emphasized that NEC was committed to producing reliable and high quality products, and by effectively utilizing the facial recognition system, Mombasa will in turn become a safer city.
