Japan's Participation in Cutlass Express21, a Multinational Maritime Exercise Sponsored by the United States

From July 26th to August 6th, 2021, the United States Africa Command sponsored Multinational Maritime Exercise Cutlass Express21 was held in Kenya, Seychelles, Djibouti, Madagascar, and Mauritius. Defense Attaché CDR Katsumata attended at the exercise from the Embassy of Japan in Kenya.
Cutlass Express21 is one of the largest exercise conducted in the East African region, and 18 countries including Japan participated in the exercise this time. This is the 10th training and the first time for Japan to participate.
Japan and Kenya have cooperated each other in the field of maritime security. For example, training fleet of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force called at Mombasa Port in 2016, and the Government of Japan provided 17 patrol boats to the newly established Kenya Coast Guard in 2019. The Government of Japan is seeking progress toward "Free and open Indo-Pacific" that aims to realise peace and stability in the international community through the connection between Asia and Africa.
