2021/11/9
On 9th November 2021, H.E. Mr. HORIE Ryoichi, Ambassador of Japan to Kenya attended the handing over ceremony of toilets and wash facilities at Kavingo Primary School. The handover is part of the Sanitation for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) that has been promoted by the Government of Japan (GOJ) to improve sanitary conditions across Kenya in cooperation with UNICEF.

Through this project, the GOJ aims to accelerate the elimination of open defecation which has adverse effects on the health and development of children whose immune systems are not fully developed. The project also endeavours to further strengthen the health and sanitation capacity in the county to achieve the UHC. The GOJ has provided about KSH 1 billion for five (5) counties in Kenya with about 10,000 toilets, and Kitui county is one of the largest beneficiaries. The toilets provided through this project are known as the “SATO toilet” made by a Japanese company “LIXIL” and specifically designed for use in developing countries, which are low-cost hygienic, easy installation & clean toilets with a special function to keep high sanitary levels.
