H.E. Ambassador OKANIWA Signs Grant Contracts with Japanese NGOs

2022/3/25
On 25 March, H.E. Ambassador OKANIWA Ken signed two grant contracts with Japanese NGOs. This scheme is part of Japan’s Official Development Assistance to Kenya and aims to support and strengthen the grassroots activities of Japanese NGOs in Kenya. The grant accorded to the Association for Aid and Relief, Japan (AAR Japan) amounts to approximately 60 million Ksh and will be utilized for Phase 3 of the project. Through this grant, AAR Japan aims to improve the enrollment and student retention rates of secondary school students in the Kalobeyei area and the Kakuma Refugee Camp.

This grant contributes to the Kenyan Government’s aim to achieve 100% transition of students from primary school to secondary school. The project will construct additional classrooms and train teachers to provide “life skills education” and “career guidance”. With the completion of this project, the students will enjoy upgraded learning environments and benefit from life-skills education and career development guidance.

The Japanese Organization for International Cooperation in Family Planning (JOICFP) was awarded a grant totaling approximately 90 million Ksh for Phase 1 of their project. JOICFP will utilize the grant to strengthen Maternal and Child Health (MCH) services in Nyeri County.

This project will contribute to Universal Health Coverage, one of the pillars of the “Big 4 Agenda”, through the construction of an obstetrics building that includes delivery rooms at a Nyeri Town Health Centre in Nyeri County.  In addition, JOICFP will also provide capacity building training to the centre’s health workers thus enabling the provision of high-quality services. With the completion of this project, it is expected that pregnant mothers, who had to give birth at home before, will be able to deliver 3,000 newborns annually at the Health Centre.
