On 12 July 2022, Mr. Kitagawa Yasuhisa, Chargé d'affaires a.i. of Japan attended an official commissioning event of local assembly of Mitsubishi L200 pickup truck at State House, Nairobi.

The event was attended by H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta, Hon. David Osiany, Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) of Industrialisation, Trade and Enterprise Development, as well as officials from Mitsubishi and its sole distributer, Simba Corporation Limited. During the event, the President Kenyatta drove the car by himself as a test drive.

In his remarks, Mr. Kitagawa said, “Mombasa city where the L200 is assembled is an area that Japan has very strong commitment through giant projects such as the expansion of port facilities and development of Special Economic Zones. The assembly of the new vehicle will contribute not only to the promotion of manufacturing, but also to job creation in Mombasa."

President Kenyatta thanked to Mitsubishi Motors, Simba Corporation, and its assembly plant AVA Ltd for being true partners in the country’s efforts in growing the automotive industry. He also said, the Government will set up a national automotive council to facilitate implementation of the National Automotive Policy that is geared towards boosting the local assembling of motor vehicles. “I take note of the issue of getting the council established and that is something we shall see if we can do before we leave office,”

According to the Industrialisation CAS David Osiany, the automotive industry has been able to provide 100,000 direct and indirect jobs to Kenyans, and the industry contributes about 30 billion Ksh each year to the government through tax.
