Ambassador OKANIWA Ken visited KEFRI in Kitui County

On 1st February 2023, H.E. Ambassador OKANIWA Ken visited Drylands Eco-Regional Research Programme (DERP) and Tiva forestry pilot site of Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) in Kitui County. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and KEFRI are currently working on reinforcing the forestry sector and the resilience of local communities to climate change through sustainable forest management and landscape restoration.
Ambassador OKANIWA visited the seed orchards at Tiva forestry pilot site where he was briefed about Melia volkenssi as a drought-tolerant tree suited for high quality timber. Ambassador OKANIWA emphasised the importance of the improved variety of Melia trees as a means to adapt to climate change and to promote sustainable forestry including commercial forestation.
Dr. Joshua Cheboiwo, Director of KEFRI and Dr. John Waithaka, KEFRI Board Chairman expressed their gratitude to the long-standing cooperation with Japan and committed further collaborative works with JICA for Kenya to cope with climate change.
JICA has collaborated with KEFRI since 1985.
