Twelve Kenyan young civil servants are going to study in Master’s programmes at top Japanese universities

On Thursday, 17th August 2023, H.E. Mr. OKANIWA Ken, Ambassador of Japan together with Mr. David NJOROGE, Secretary, Human Resource Development State Department for Public Service, Ministry of Public Service, Gender and Affirmative Action, attended the Send-off Party for the 3rd Batch of the Project for Human Development Scholarship (JDS) Fellows.
 
Twelve Kenyan young civil servants were selected to study in Master’s programmes at Japanese universities for the 3rd batch JDS programme.
 
JDS programme helps to strengthen capacity of young civil servants in Kenya by providing opportunities for postgraduate study at top Japanese universities, thereby enhancing the partnership between Kenya and Japan.
 
Nineteen Kenyan young civil servants are currently studying in Japanese universities and two of them has already returned to Kenya after receiving a MA degree with support from the 2020 and 2021 JDS programme.

About JDS programme:

JDS programme is currently implemented in 19 partner countries globally. The programme started in 1999, initially catering for young civil servants in Asian countries transitioning into a market economy. Over time, more countries have been included in the programme. Kenya is only one of two countries in Africa to be included the programme.
 
JDS programme offers fellows opportunities to obtain Master's degrees from top Japanese universities in various fields in mainly social science, depending on the priority development issues of each participating country. A limited number of Doctoral degrees are also available.
