2024/2/13
On 13 February 2024, Ambassador Okaniwa visited the 'Vege-lunch' programme of the 'Improving Food and Nutrition through Enhancing Climate Change Adaptation in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions Project (IFNuS)' in Turkana County. This project is being implemented under the guidance of expert from the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) in the framework of a technical co-operation project. It aims to improve the nutritional status of school children by introducing vegetables grown by the children into the school meals in order to improve their nutrition.
JICA expert Mr. Murakami explained to Ambassador Okaniwa that the project is designed for sustainability, using vegetables from which seeds can be harvested and used for the next planting, and that despite the challenges at the beginning, it has now been accepted not only by the children but also by their parents and others.
Ambassador Okaniwa stated that through JICA's food education programme, children can lead better lives and that children are the future of society, and expressed hope that the County Commissioners would help spread the programme to other parts of Turkana.
The County Executive for Education, Sports and Civil Protection, Mr Audan, told Ambassador Okaniwa that the Japanese assistance is in line with the development agenda of Turkana County, that the Turkana people love the Japanese people and thanked JICA expert Murakami for his support.
