2024/2/14
On 14 February 2024, Ambassador Okaniwa visited the 'Project for Establishment of Decentralized Solid Waste Management System for Recyclable Society in Kakuma and Kalobeyei Wards, Turkana County' in Turkana County. The project is implemented by Peace Winds Japan within the framework of the Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Project and aims to reduce the amount of waste and the impact of solid waste on human health and the environment.

Ms. Chiba, Country Representative for Kenya Mission of Peace Winds Japan, explained to Ambassador Okaniwa that in Kakuma Refugee Camp, there is no waste collection and there are no facilities to dispose of it, so people have to live side by side with a littered environment and bad smells, and that the participants in today's training will play an important role in properly sorting and collecting the waste and turning it into resources. The project, which is supported by the Japanese Government and implemented by Peace Winds with the participants, aims to make Kakuma a clean town where people can live healthy lives.

Ambassador Okaniwa told Peace Winds Japan officials and training participants that he hopes the training you are receiving will continue to help you to reduce waste, recycle and reuse. Ambassador Okaniwa also explained that in Japan, for example, waste is recycled and reused as much as possible, and if it cannot be used, it is incinerated at high temperatures because there is no land to dump it, and that in Japan and other developed countries, when mobile phones are used up, the precious metals are removed from the phone and reused to make a new phone.
