2024/2/14
On 14 February 2024, Ambassador Okaniwa visited auto garage constructed under the 'Automotive mechanic training programme for women and youth' of the 'Enhancing Women's Resilience in Refugee Camps and Host Communities' project, implemented by UN-Women in Turkana County. For this programme, Japan contributed approximately 490 million yen (about 469 million KES) to UN-Women, with Peace Winds Japan acting as the implementing agency.

The programme aims to achieve long-term peace, security and humanitarian needs by promoting women's participation in decision-making, improved conflict prevention and resolution capacity, economic independence and protection from sexual violence in the Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement, which was established to integrate refugees and host community residents.

Ambassador Okaniwa was briefed by UN-Women and Peace Winds officials on auto garage. The Peace Winds Japan engineer responsible for construction management explained that "this car repair shop is one of the best facilities in Kenya in terms of size and equipment". Ambassador Okaniwa encouraged the three graduates of the Vehicle Maintenance Training by Toyota Kenya Academy.
