2024/6/11
On 11th June 2024, Mr. OGIHARA Hiroshi, Chargé d' Affaires ad Interim of Japan to the Republic of Kenya, signed a Grant Contract with Ms. CHIBA Akiko, Country Representative for Kenya Mission of a Japanese NGO, namely Peace Winds Japan, for the ‘Project for Establishment of Decentralized Solid Waste Management System for Recyclable Society in Kakuma and Kalobeyei Wards, Turkana County (Phase-2)’ amounting to USD 647,356.

In Kakuma and Kalobeyei Wards of Turkana District, urbanization due to the influx of refugees and the settlement of nomads has resulted in the generation of 184 tons of solid waste per day. Most of the solid waste is illegally dumped, which encourages the growth of rodents and insects that cause malaria and diarrhea, and also causes environmental pollution.

This project will support the establishment of a decentralized solid waste management system, collection, transportation, and primary management of solid waste, as well as the establishment and operation of the Material Recovery Facility. Through the implementation of this project, the goal is to ensure that solid waste collected from each community in Kakuma and Kalobeyei Wards is properly sorted and recycled at the Material Recovery Facility.
