On July 13, H.E. Mr. OKANIWA Ken, Ambassador of Japan attended the opening ceremony of the 2nd “Koshien” High School Baseball Tournament in Kenya at JKUAT. “Koshien” is a special tournament for all young baseball players where high schools vie to become number one in Japan.

The tournament was organized by the Japan-Africa Baseball & Softball Foundation (J-ABS) and the Baseball Federation of Kenya with the aim of nurturing Kenyan youth through the Japanese baseball culture. This year’s event followed the success of the inaugural Koshien High School that took place last year. The tournament also expanded to include a women’s league this year.

At the opening ceremony, Mr. Titus Muchiri, President of Kenya Baseball Federation made a speech, then the Ambassador OKANIWA did. After the speeches, Ambassador OKANIWA threw out the first pitch.

It is hoped that this tournament will continue to be an opportunity to popularize baseball in Kenya and to promote the sound development of young people through the sport, hereby contributing to Japan-Kenya friendship.
